I just hung up the phone with a coaching client who made this statement: “Connie, I am comfortable selling anything…except myself. That part – is HARD.” As much as I understood her feelings, I was also very concerned about her future success and job security. (FYI—she gave me permission to use “her story” for this blog. I NEVER share secrets from my clients.)
I’ll share with you what I shared with “Mary.” There has 
never been a more for us to SELL OURSELVES, validate our worth and demonstrate how much we bring value to the table….than NOW! In a world that has little patience for mediocrity, ‘just doing my job’ attitudes and people ‘waiting for the light at the end of the tunnel,’ the ones that make their OWN bright light and exceed expectations at every turn will be RECOGNIZED, APPRECIATED AND REWARDED for realizing that high-performance is definitely the name of the game.
The question is: Do you want to still be employed and employable in two year? Five years? Ten years? If so, don’t’ waste another second. The time to pull from within and give it everything you’ve got is now. But maybe “Mary” speaks for us all when she says, “But that’s hard to do when I’m worried, stressed, tired and insecure about my future. It’s all I can do to ‘just get the job done’ some days.”
Bad news: It IS hard to be creative, energetic, full of ideas, cooperative, and forward-thinking when bills are piling up, the economy is worrisome, people email right through dinner, cell phones are glued to hands, customers are more demanding and the world seldom sleeps.
Good news: But for the people who can move beyond these negative feelings? Rise to the occasion and take a bold stand to differentiate themselves and STAND OUT FROM THE CROWD in a positive way? Oh yeah – those people are going to experience great things ahead.
I believe with all my heart that this can be a great time. A time when you and I can figure out what we are really all about. What we stand for. What motivates us. What empowers us. And how we can MAKE POSITIVE THINGS HAPPEN in a world that seems crazy, insane and exhausting.
I am CHOOSING to be more creative, more passionate, more productive, and more confident than ever before. Why? Because I have no other choice if I want to succeed. And, believe me, success is not an option for me—and hopefully, not for you either. Ready to tackle the world? Then start with a change and a choice. CHANGE any attitudes and behaviors that may get in your way and sabotage your success. And CHOOSE to forge ahead with spirit, determination and a lot of love along the way. The future ROCKS!
