What You Need to Know Before Booking a Sales Keynote Speaker

Posted by Connie Podesta

What Every Event Planner Needs to Know Before Booking a Sales Keynote Speaker

The questions every event planner should be asking before booking a sales keynote speaker, answered by someone with 40+years on stage.

If you are an event planner or sales leader researching keynote speakers right now, you are probably asking some version of the same questions.

Will my audience actually get something out of this, or just feel pumped up for a day and then go right back to what they were doing?

Will this speaker connect with MY people, in MY industry, at MY event?

And the big one: Will I see real results?

After 40 years on stage and thousands of events across virtually every industry imaginable, I want to answer those questions directly. Here is exactly how I would answer them if we were talking right now.

What Will My Sales Team Actually Walk Away With?

This is the most important question. And it is the one many sales or motivational keynote speakers dance around.

Here is my straightforward answer: your salespeople will walk away with a fundamentally better understanding of people. How to read them, connect with them, communicate with them, and build the kind of trust that turns a one-time transaction into a long-term relationship.

And that matters more than ever right now. According to Salesforce’s State of Sales, 82% of sales professionals say building relationships is the most important part of selling. Yet 59% of business buyers say they are not satisfied with the efforts sales teams make to understand their goals.

That gap? That is exactly what I close.

When your team communicates better, they build stronger relationships. When they build stronger relationships, they earn more trust. And when they earn more trust:

  • Salespeople close more transactions
  • They build stronger pipelines
  • They generate more referrals
  • They create client relationships that last for years instead of months
  • They become the people prospects remember, recommend, and return to

That is not rah-rah inspiration. That is a skill set. And it is one every single person on your team can develop. See my keynote topics to learn exactly what those skills look like in action.

Will This Be Customized for My Audience — Or Is It a Generic Speech?

I do not do generic.

Before every event, I invest time learning about your organization, your audience, your goals, and what success looks like for your specific team. Whether I am speaking to a national sales conference, a franchise convention, a financial services firm, or a healthcare organization, the content is built around your people. What I have learned over four decades is that people are people, no matter what they sell. But how I connect those universal truths to YOUR team’s world? That is where the customization lives, and it is what separates a forgettable event from one your team is still talking about a year later.

How Do You Keep a Sales Audience Engaged — Especially the Skeptics?

Here is a little secret about salespeople: they are some of the most discerning audiences on the planet. They can spot fluff from a mile away. They have heard every motivational cliché in the book. And if you lose them in the first five minutes, you have lost them for good.

That is exactly why I use humor.

Not because I am trying to be a stand-up comedian, but because humor is the fastest way to lower the walls that every audience brings into the room. When people are laughing, they are open. When they are open, they learn. And when they learn, they change.

Research backs this up: according to communication experts, teams that communicate effectively — including through humor and storytelling — can see productivity increases of up to 25%. My audiences go from laughing to nodding to genuinely seeing something about themselves they could not see before. That is when the real work gets done.

What Kind of ROI Can I Expect?

Event planners are increasingly accountable for results, and rightly so. A keynote is not just a speech. It is a strategic investment in your people.

Here is how I think about ROI: the goal is never a tempora ry boost of enthusiasm that fades by Monday morning. The goal is lasting behavioral change that shows up in your team’s performance long after the event is over.

When someone leaves one of my keynotes with a fresh perspective on how they communicate, connect, and build trust. Those changes compound. Better conversations lead to stronger relationships. Stronger relationships lead to more trust. And more trust leads to more business. See what organizations across every industry have experienced when they bring Connie to their events.

Why Humor? Is This Going to Be Too Casual for Our Audience?

This is one of my favorite questions.

Here is the truth: the most impactful moments I have ever created on stage happened because the audience was laughing first. Humor is not a distraction from the message. It IS the delivery system.

When people laugh together, something shifts. Defenses come down. Walls come down. And suddenly they are not just hearing what I am saying, they are feeling it. Recognizing it. Applying it to their own lives and their own teams.

My style is high energy, high substance, and yes, funny. But every laugh is intentional. Every story has a point. And every point drives toward one outcome: your team performing at a higher level.

This approach has earned me a place in the National Speakers Association CPAE Speaker Hall of Fame. A lifetime designation awarded to the top 1% of professional speakers in the world, evaluated by peers on speaking excellence and professionalism.

How Do I Know This Will Work for MY Industry?

In four decades, I have worked with sales teams in financial services, real estate, healthcare, technology, insurance, retail, franchising, automotive, pharmaceuticals, and everything in between. Take a look at the partial list of industries and organizations I have had the privilege of serving.

The industries are different. The products are different. The challenges look different on the surface.

But people? People are the same everywhere. They want to feel valued. They want to be understood. They want to know what they do matters. And the salespeople who figure out how to make their customers feel all three of those things? They win. Every time. In every industry.

What Happens After the Event?

The best keynotes do not end when I walk off stage. They start conversations. They shift perspectives. They give your team a shared language and a new way of looking at how they show up every day.

81% of companies say productivity would improve with better processes, skills, and training, and yet most organizations are still treating people skills as an afterthought. Your event can change that.

I have watched people leave my sessions and completely transform how they communicate with their clients, building referral businesses they never thought possible, breaking through performance plateaus they had been stuck at for years, and finally becoming the salesperson they always knew they could be. That is what I love most about this work. Not the speech. What happens after the speech.

Ready to Talk About Your Event?

If you are planning a sales kickoff, national conference, franchise event, or leadership summit and you want a keynote that delivers REAL RESULTS (not just a great hour), I would love to have a conversation.

Explore my keynote topics to see what is possible for your audience. Then let’s talk about your goals, your team, and how we can create an experience they will be talking about long after the event is over.
