Leadership…How to be the Person Others Want to Follow!

by Connie Podesta

True leadership isn’t managing—it’s empowering. Be the person others choose to follow by setting the bar high and inspiring ownership.

Let’s face it—our world is hungry for leaders who don’t just hold the title but actually earn the trust. Leadership today isn’t about a corner office, a fancy title, or micromanaging tasks. It’s about influence, empowerment, and creating an environment where people want to show up, step up, and give their best.

Leadership is not easy. It’s messy, demanding, and deeply personal. But it’s also a privilege. You directly shape the success—or failure—of the people who look to you. Your choices, creativity, integrity, and courage are the foundation others stand on.

So here’s the question: Why should anyone want to follow you?

Step 1: Lead With Self-Awareness

Great leadership starts with YOU.
Ask yourself: What do you bring to the table that inspires loyalty and respect? Is it your vision? Your courage? Your creativity? Or simply your ability to listen and truly see people?

Pro Tip: Write down your top 5 strengths—and 3 blind spots. Share both with your team. You’ll earn more respect by owning your humanity than pretending you have it all figured out.

Step 2: Empower, Don’t Manage

Nobody wakes up saying, “I hope someone manages me today.” People don’t want to be controlled; they want to be empowered.

  • Managing is about telling people what to do.

  • Leading is about inspiring people to do it because they want to.

  • Managing is about being right.

  • Leading is about doing what’s right.

Pro Tip: Shift your language. Instead of “Here’s what you need to do,” try “Here’s what we’re trying to achieve—how would you approach it?”

Step 3: Be Fearless in Change

Business-as-usual is gone. Teams don’t thrive on “the way we’ve always done it.” They thrive on innovation, adaptability, and courage. Leaders either fight for the past or forge into the future. There’s no middle ground.

Fearful leaders cling to the status quo.
Fearless leaders embrace tough conversations, bold strategies, and the long game.

Pro Tip: Ask your team one question each month: “What should we stop doing that no longer works?” Then actually act on it.

Step 4: Set the Standard High

People rise—or sink—to the level of your expectations. If you model excellence, your team will stretch to meet it. If you lower the bar, don’t be surprised when they crawl under it.

Power Tip: Replace vague expectations with measurable behaviors. Instead of “Do better with communication,” say, “Every client email must be answered within 24 hours.”

Step 5: Create Ownership, Not Obligation

The best leaders don’t motivate people to work for them—they inspire people to work for themselves. True leadership is about instilling pride, ownership, and purpose.

Pro Tip: When celebrating wins, don’t just say, “Great job.” Instead, connect the dots: “Because of your creativity, we landed that deal. That’s the kind of ownership that moves us forward.”

Final Thought

Leadership isn’t about getting people to follow because they have to—it’s about creating a culture where people choose to follow you because they trust you, respect you, and feel stronger with you by their side.

Be bold. Be human. Be the leader others want to follow.
