Every organization rises or falls on leadership. Period. As a leadership keynote speaker, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful leadership can transform organizations and how the wrong leadership can undermine everything.
In my work with top-tier leaders, managers, and supervisors globally, I’ve identified four distinct leadership styles. One is remarkably effective, driving a healthy culture, high morale, and rock-star performance. The other three? They sabotage success, cripple culture, and suffocate teams.
Let’s dive straight into the leadership styles you need to eliminate—immediately—and the one style that delivers results.
Three Leadership Styles That Sabotage Success:
1. The Micro-Manager:
These leaders are ambitious, driven, and competitive—traits that should spell success. But their obsession with control stunts team growth. Micro-managers hover relentlessly, stifling creativity, ownership, and initiative. They undermine their teams’ confidence by swooping in to “save” every situation, leaving employees unable to develop essential problem-solving and leadership skills.
Action Step: Stop hovering, start empowering. Set clear expectations, trust your team, delegate effectively, and step back. Encourage calculated risk-taking. Coach your people, don’t rescue them. If you never let go of control, you’ll never build a bench of future leaders.
2. The Too-Nice Leader:
At first glance, this leader seems wonderful—kind, compassionate, approachable. But they avoid conflict at all costs, resulting in blurred boundaries, poor accountability, and underperforming employees. The best workers carry the slack and resent it, while underachievers coast by without consequences.
Action Step: Nice is great. But fair, firm, and consistent is better. Establish clear boundaries and expectations, hold crucial conversations about performance regularly, and implement fair, consistent consequences. Show employees respect by being honest about what’s working—and what isn’t.
3. The Absentee Leader:
They’re physically present—but mentally checked out. Too busy with their own tasks, they ignore the team’s need for guidance, recognition, mentoring, and clear communication. Employees stagnate, feeling invisible, unvalued, and disengaged.
Action Step: Prioritize your people. Schedule regular check-ins, offer consistent feedback, coaching, and mentoring. Recognition isn’t optional—it’s essential. Leadership is an active commitment to your team’s growth and success, not a passive role.
The Leadership Style That Transforms Teams—The STANDOUT Leader:
This leader is committed, connected, and courageous. They balance kindness and accountability, freedom and structure, creativity and clarity. They champion growth by mentoring, coaching, challenging, and inspiring team members to reach new levels of excellence. They set clear expectations and deliver fair consequences. They applaud effort but courageously confront performance issues when needed.
These are leaders who:
-
Empower Growth – Foster independence and creativity by trusting and delegating.
-
Communicate Clearly – Set crystal-clear expectations and meaningful boundaries.
-
Mentor Consistently – Invest time regularly into teaching, coaching, and developing.
-
Balance Heart and Head – Care genuinely, yet maintain fair, consistent accountability.
-
Role Model Excellence – Lead by example, demonstrating integrity, resilience, and passion.
Action Step: Evaluate yourself honestly. Embrace vulnerability, ask for feedback, and commit to personal and professional growth. Become the STANDOUT leader your team deserves.
