It Stops You From Reaching Your Potential
By Sales Motivational Speaker Connie Podesta
Often, one of the first things I tell sales audiences is to QUIT defining sales the old way because when they think of sales in a “traditional” sense – they become fearful. The “I can’t do it” sets in. The phone becomes the enemy. The prospecting grinds to a halt.
Listen, we were all BORN to sell. Look at any given 2-year-old. They are masters at handling objections. They don’t take no for an answer. Their feelings aren’t hurt when they hit a stall. They do a needs assessment to figure out which parent is the pushover. See? If you can do it at 2 – you can do it as an adult. But yet, people are wary of the word.
I’ll ask audiences, “Who’s in sales?” Many times, only a fraction of the people raise their hands. Really? Are you married? Then, trust me, you’re in sales. Have you ever swayed a spouse or partner’s decision? Convinced them to see something your way? Yep. You’re in sales. Are you a parent? Have you ever negotiated with a child to clean a room or do homework? That’s sales.
It’s not about just selling a product or service. It’s about the ability to get people on board. Build consensus. Rally support. It’s about sharing a passion. An idea. A belief. That’s all sales. Every time you refer a friend or family member to a restaurant, hair salon, dentist – whatever – that’s sales. When you talk your husband or wife into taking that vacation. That’s sales. When you incentivize your child to get good grades – that’s sales. While some might see sales as scary, when you look at it in the context that it is something you already do frequently, it eases the stress of it.
So, stop looking at sales the same old way, and start embracing it for the life skill you already have and can fine tune! When you do? You’ll be amazed at what you can accomplish!
